DUBAI History

For the first time in history Dubai was referred to in 1095 by the Spanish-Arab geographer Abu Abdullah al-Bakri in his "Book of Geography". The first mentioning of Dubai by a European traveler was made in the late XVI century by a Venetian merchant Gaspero Balbi who estimated the land highly for its pearling industry calling the area Dibei.

Another European source refers to Dubai in 1820 when British historians made an allusion to a city calling it Al Wasl. The origin of the word itself is disputable: some historians believe it to be of Persian origin while others say ut is ancient Arabic. The most credible variant, however, is that the word comes from an ancient Arabic ?Daba (a derivative of Yadub)? ? which means ?to creep? ? a hypothetic reference to Dubai creek.

The major part of the Dubai emirate consists of rolling sand dunes lapping the foothills of the arid Hajar mountains in the east. Until a decade or two ago, the dunes were inhabited by nomadic bedouin roaming with their flocks and herds. Today the nomads have all settled, in villages in the few fertile oases or valleys, or else in the city.
Modern Dubai is the product of the past 20 years of intensive development. Prior to that, Dubai was a small trading port, clustered around the mouth of the Creek.

It had grown gradually from a fishing village inhabited in the 18th century by members of the Bani Yas tribe. Its origins, however, go back into the far more distant past. The town's museum displays a rich collection of objects found in graves of the first millenium BC at nearby Al-Qusais, while a caravan station of the sixth century AD was excavated in the expatriate suburb of Jumairah.

GETTING THERE

Dubai International Airport (DXB) is the busiest airport in the Middle East. The national carrier is Emirates, which flies to some 45 destinations in the Middle East, Europe, Australia, Africa and the Indian subcontinent. For all the talk of free markets, air fares out of the UAE are just as strictly regulated as anywhere else; there are no bucket shops. Dubai International Airport has no separate airport departure tax; it's included in the price of your ticket.
 
 
Buses run from Dubai to other parts of the UAE and surrounding countries. One useful bus route runs to Hatta from the Deira bus station. To get to most other cities in the Emirates, take a Dubai Transport minibus. There are two buses a day to Muscat, Oman. Balawi Bus Service runs to Jordan twice weekly and to Egypt on Wednesdays.

Dubai Dress Code: Clothing should be conservative in Dubai. Women should avoid wearing revealing or tightly fitting clothing, especially in rural areas, and go for garments such as loosely cut trousers and long dresses.

Greeting Someone in Dubai: Usual practice is the use of 'Sayed' (Mr) or 'Sayeda' (Mrs) followed by the first name. The first name should always be prefixed with the honorific title, especially in business situations.

Business Hours and Banking: Dubai's business community works Saturday to Thursday from 08:00 to 13:00 and 16:00 to 20:00. Banking hours in Dubai are from 08:00 to 13:00, Saturday to Wednesday, although some also open from 16:30 to 18:30. On Thursdays, banks are open between 08:00 and 12:00.
